WALKING ALONG TIME
Sunrise Waiting Room
Instructor: Xingwu Li
Individual Work
The purpose of the project is to design a space for people to wait for sunrise. It focuses on creating sensory experiences to influence people's consciousness. The people's experience of sunrise is evoked through creating space atmospheres, just like what Peter Zumthor said in his book, "We perceive atmosphere through our emotional sensibility."
In the project, the architecture atmosphere is the starting point to effect senses and change people's cognition, which helps people comprehend sunrise and nature. As the intermedia between human and nature, sunrise waiting room studies five types of experiences - scale, light, sound, temperature, and material.
Time is the most significant factor for sunrise, and it is also the clue for people to explore the spaces. I divided the sunrise process into four phases, dusking, glimmering, shimmering and shinning, and design four kinds of space - waiting, ascending, chasing, and enlightening - correspond to the phases. According to the features of each phase, the experience of sensory creates different atmospheres so that people are able to experience the processes of sunrise by following the circulation. In other words, the sunrise waiting room is a four-dimensional design.
